Biodata Format for Job

Fill in your details and the biodata assembles in the section order Indian employers expect, with the declaration block at the end.

Most recent qualification first.

Leave blank if you are a fresher — the section is skipped.

Your biodata

A biodata for a job is a one to two page document that leads with personal details — name, father’s name, date of birth, marital status, nationality and languages — and then sets out education, work experience and skills, closing with a signed declaration. It is the most personal of the three application document formats used in India.

It is asked for in government recruitment, teaching, banking, defence, railways, and many clerical, field and support roles. Private-sector corporate hiring generally expects a resume instead.

How a job biodata is structured

The section order is close to fixed, and deviating from it is the most common reason a biodata looks wrong to the person reading it.

1. Career objective (2 lines, optional but usual) 2. Personal details (name, father's name, DOB, gender, marital status, nationality, languages, contact number, email, address) 3. Educational qualifications (most recent first, with year and marks) 4. Work experience (omit entirely if you are a fresher) 5. Skills 6. Hobbies and interests (optional) 7. Declaration (statement, place, date, signature)

Three conventions carry most of the weight:

  • Marks are stated, not implied. Indian biodata lists percentage or CGPA against each qualification along with the board or university and the year of passing. Leaving them out looks like an omission rather than a style choice.
  • The declaration is not decorative. The closing statement, signed with place and date, is what turns the document from a summary into something the candidate stands behind. Government and public-sector formats treat it as mandatory.
  • Keep it to two pages. A biodata is a record, not a pitch, so it does not need the space a CV takes.

Worked example

Accounts role, Ahmedabad

Candidate: Sunita Patel, daughter of Mahesh Patel, born 14 March 2003

Education: B.Com, Gujarat University, 2024, 68 per cent · HSC, GSEB, 2021, 74 per cent · SSC, GSEB, 2019, 79 per cent

Experience: Accounts Assistant, Shah & Associates, Ahmedabad, June 2024 to August 2026

Skills: Tally ERP 9, GST filing, MS Excel, data entry

Declaration: signed at Ahmedabad, dated 4 September 2026

Note that the education block runs most recent first and carries the board or university against each entry. That ordering is what a recruiter scanning fifty biodatas is expecting.

Biodata, resume and CV compared

These three words are used interchangeably in Indian job postings, and they describe genuinely different documents. Sending the wrong one is rarely fatal, but sending the right one signals that you understood the instruction.

If the role you are applying for is in private-sector corporate hiring, build a resume instead — the resume builder produces an ATS-safe layout, and the ATS checker scores it against the job description before you send it.

A note on what you choose to include

Date of birth, gender and marital status are conventional in Indian biodata and are frequently asked for on government application forms. They are not required for private-sector applications, and several fields in the generator above can be left blank for that reason. Everything you type stays in your browser; nothing on this page is uploaded anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is a biodata for a job?

A biodata is a one to two page document that leads with personal details such as name, father's name, date of birth, marital status and nationality, followed by education, work experience, skills and a signed declaration. It is commonly used in Indian government, banking, teaching and clerical recruitment.

What is the difference between biodata and a resume?

A biodata leads with personal details and reads as a factual record, closing with a declaration. A resume leads with skills and achievements and reads as a targeted pitch, with no declaration. Biodata is usual in government and clerical hiring; a resume is expected in private-sector corporate hiring.

What should I write in a biodata for a job?

In order: a two-line career objective, personal details, educational qualifications with the board or university, year and marks, work experience if any, skills, optional hobbies, and a declaration signed with place and date.

Should I attach a photograph to a job biodata?

Attach one only if the application specifically asks for it, which government and some public-sector formats often do. For private-sector applications a photograph is not expected and is generally better left off.

How long should a job biodata be?

One page for a fresher, two at most for someone with several years of experience. A biodata is a record rather than a pitch, so length beyond two pages usually means detail that belongs in a CV instead.

Is a declaration necessary in biodata?

It is standard and, in government and public-sector formats, effectively mandatory. The declaration states that the information given is true to the best of your knowledge and is signed with the place and date.
